Frequently Asked
Questions

How do I measure for a stair runner?

Measure the width of one tread and leave a border of bare stair on each side. For the length, count each tread and each riser, then measure the depth and the height. Runners are made up to 100 ft, so a long flight can be one piece. The stair measuring guide walks through each step.

Are the stair runners ready to install when they arrive?

Yes. The length is the one you ordered and the edges are serged, so you do not cut or bind them at home. You still install them. They are not a loose rug you drop on the flight.

Can I use a stair runner on wooden stairs?

Yes. Wooden stairs are installed with the underlay and gripper pack, staples or a nail gun. The backing does not hold the runner on its own, and you do not glue it down. Start at the top step and work down. The order is in the stair runner installation guide.

What is the best width for my stairs?

The best width is narrower than the tread, so a strip of stair shows on each side. Measure one tread before you order. Do not pick a width from a photo. The border is what keeps the runner off the edges, including an open side. Widths and the gap are in the runner size guide.

Are these suitable for a busy shared stair?

For a busy home flight, choose the durable stair runners. They are the hard-wearing end of this range. A shared building or an office stair is a heavier job, and this range does not have a separate commercial stair collection to point you to.

How do I install a stair runner?

Install the underlay and gripper pack on each tread, then fix the runner from the top step down. You need a tape measure, a staple gun, a carpet bolster, a safety knife and a rubber mallet. Stair rods are optional and do not provide the grip. The order is in the stair runner installation guide.

Our stair runners are cut to the length of your staircase, up to 100 ft in one piece, and arrive with serged edges, ready to install. A runner leaves a strip of stair showing on each side, so you keep the look of your wood or painted stairs while adding comfort underfoot.

Stair runner colors and borders

Beige stair runners and plain stair runners keep a staircase light and simple, and let the wood on each side do the talking. Green stair runners bring color to the flight if you want the stairs to stand out.

Striped stair runners and bordered stair runners draw the eye up the stairs and give a crisp edge, which works well on a long or narrow staircase. As a guide, the more of each tread you leave showing, the more the wood becomes part of the look.

Traditional, modern and animal print stair runners

Traditional stair runners suit older homes with turned spindles and classic detail. Modern stair runners give a cleaner look in newer homes. Animal print stair runners are for anyone who wants the staircase to be the first thing people notice from the hall.

Flat-weave, plush and durable stair runners

Flat-weave stair runners have a thin, tight weave that sits neatly on each tread and is easy to vacuum. Soft luxurious stair runners have a plusher feel underfoot, which makes them a good fit for the stairs up to the bedrooms. For the main staircase in a busy home, start with our durable stair runners, made for daily traffic from shoes, pets and kids.

Installing a stair runner

A stair runner is fixed to each step rather than laid loose. Our stair runner underlay and gripper pack holds it firmly in place without glue or carpet tape. You'll need a tape measure, staple gun, carpet bolster, safety knife and rubber mallet. Start at the top step and work your way down, keeping the runner central as you go.

Anti-slip stair runners add extra grip underfoot, but they're installed the same way. Stair rods are optional and purely decorative. Our stair runner installation guide takes you through each step.

Made to measure for your stairs

Before you order, use our stair measuring guide to work out the width and length you need. Your runner then arrives cut to size with serged edges, ready to install with no trimming. If your stairs turn at a landing, measure each straight run separately so the runner sits neatly on every flight.
