How to fit stair rods: The best way to install your new stair rods

Having stair rods fitted to your stair runner can help you create a sophisticated look that makes your home look refined and gives it a premium edge that you won’t find elsewhere.

Over the years, we have developed a range of tips, tricks and techniques for you to consult when installing stair rods.

In this comprehensive guide, you will find everything you need to know when adding stair rods to your stairway.

If you haven’t already installed your stair runner, you’re going to need to do that first! Check out our guide ‘How To Fit A Stair Carpet Runner’ and then come back and add the stair rods.

Let's get equipped

To remove install your new rods, you’re going to need to open your toolbox. Here is a list of tools that will help you complete the job:

• Stair Rods • Hacksaw • Tape Measure • Screwdriver or Drill

• Screws • Brackets

(All Runrug stair rods come with relevent screws and brackets)

Step One: Remove the Finials

Before you start to cut the rod to your desired length, you will need to remove the finials from the edge of each side of the rod.

Once this is completed, you will be left with a singular rod that is finial-free on either side.

Step Two: Mark your Desired Length

Measure your rods to the desired length and mark the spot with a pencil or non-permanent pen.

Step Three: Cut the Rod

Using a hack saw, cut the rod safely to your marked length. Repeat this for all of the rods.

Watch out for your fingers on this step, and always use the relevant safety procedures when handling a hack saw.

Step Four: Add the Finials

Place the rod into the brackets and add the finials back onto the rod.

This will leave you with a final rod that you can fix into place on your stairway.

Step Five: Position the Rod

Position the rod into place and make sure that the brackets sit on either side of the runner.

Next, screw the bracket into place on the staircase with the screws provided. Complete this for both sides to ensure that the rod is secure in place.

Repeat for each stair rod on the stairs.
