Fitting a stair carpet runner is not as difficult as you may think. Here at runrug, we have mastered the art of fitting a lot of things including stair rods, hall runners and stair carpet runner and we want to bestow our wisdom to you. This is our step by step guide on how to fit your stair runner to your staircase. Don’t worry, it’s not too tricky!
First of all, let’s start with the equipment that you’ll need to fit your stair carpet runner:
Once you have gathered all of the equipment that you’ll need, you can start with the process of steps to add your stair carpet runner to your staircase. Make sure that you have all of the equipment before you begin because there’s nothing more frustrating than having to stop the process just because you gave your rubber mallet to your nosy neighbour, Ian at number 26.
Touch up the staircase
It is a good idea to make any improvements or to tidy up any spaces on your staircase, such as retouching paint or refinishing the wood of the stairs before you start to fit your runner. This will ensure that you don’t get any paint or varnish on the brand new stair runner. Don’t worry, you’re not the only clumsy one.
Place your runner into position
Once you have made all your improvements, it’s time to start with the big job of fitting the stair runner. Ensuring that the runner is central to the staircase is super important, and it’s one tip that you should keep coming back to throughout the process. If you forget, don’t worry – we’ll remind you. The last thing you want is your mother-in-law complaining that it’s wonky when she comes over for Sunday lunch.
Starting from the top step, roll the carpet runner out and measure that the space on either side is equal. Having equal spacing on either side of the runner will ensure that the runner is aligned correctly and you won’t come into any problems later on in the process.
Secure the runner
Using the bolster and mallet, secure the runner into the groove of the stair. Tap along the runner to secure it into place by doing so you will ensure a firm hold from the carpet gripper which sits underneath the runner.
Apply firm pressure evenly across the width of the runner with the bolster. After this, give the runner a few taps with the bolster and rubber mallet which will help to secure the runner firmly in place.
Pull the runner tight
As you are completing the process for each step, make sure you continue to do two things. Firstly, ensure that your runner is still in place and measure that the sides are equal. Secondly, a tip that will make sure your alignment doesn’t go off track is to pull the runner tight when fitting each step. This way, your runner will be central to the tread, and you won’t have any loose carpet.
Use the grippers
Continue to secure the carpet runner into the grippers for all the steps from the top to bottom. Complete this for the entire staircase until you get to the final step where you will find you have excess carpet runner left over.
Cut the excess
Using the knife, cut the excess carpet away from the runner. Carefully slice across the groove and brush away any bits which may be cut during the process. Make sure that you are careful with the knife as you’re close to finishing and we know how excited you’ll be to see the finished product – just make sure you don’t chop off any fingers in the process.
Once this is finished, you can add beading to the bottom of the staircase as a finishing touch. This will give your carpet stair runner a smooth and sophisticated look and will add a finishing touch to the staircase.
Congratulations! You have successfully fitted your first stair carpet runner. It wasn’t too difficult, was it?
