How long should my stair runner be?
Count your steps, then measure one tread and one riser in inches. Use the “What size do I need?” button and we will do the math for you. We also add 10% for wastage, then round up to the next foot. The full method is also in our how to measure guide.
How wide should my stair runner be?
Measure the tread from side to side. Most people leave 2 to 6in of stair showing on each side, and 2ft to 2ft 7in is the sweet spot for most customers. For a full-width look, pick the nearest width to the tread.
Do I need underlay for a stair runner?
While it is not essential, we highly recommend it. It cushions each step, quiets footsteps and helps the runner last. Check Add stair runner underlay, enter your number of steps, and we send the matching pad and gripper pack. See our guide to installing the pack on our how to fit underlay and gripper page.
Can I fit a stair runner myself?
Yes. Most of our customers install their own stair runner. Follow our step by step how to fit a stair runner guide. If your stairs wind or turn, this is a bit trickier, we always recommend getting advice from a professional local flooring installer before you order for a winding staircase.
Can I put a stair runner over existing carpet?
You can, but we recommend taking the old carpet up and fitting straight to the staircase for a more secure fit and a cleaner finish. A thick or soft carpet pile can make the runner shift on top of it. Read more in our stair runner over carpet guide.
Do I need stair rods with a stair runner?
No, stair rods aren’t essential. Stair rods are a decorative extra, we recommend rods if you’re looking for a more premium and finished look. You can read our step-by-step how to fit stair rods guide if you do opt for that finishing touch.
